, another is in critical condition after a double shooting in gilroy. neighbors rush to help the victim seconds after the shooting last night. nbc bay area is live in gilroy where he spoke to those neighbors. >> reporter: we're learning tonight one of the men is a father of twin boys, one of the men who was shot yesterday or last night. and the girl who police say they are following up on a number of leads as they look for those responsible for this shooting. >> it sounded, like, about more than five gunshots. >> the sound of gunfire caused irma to run out of her home on chestnut street in gilroy. three doors down, she saw a crowd gathering on the front lawn and two of them on the ground. one of them was her friend, stevie. >> so i went down on my knees and i got both of his hands and i said stevie, hang in there, please hang in there. look at my eyes and don't look away. >> within minutes, the police and paramedics arrived. while irma held stevie, he told her about these guy who is followed her from a nearby market. >> he responded to me and told me he just came back from the market. h

in gilroy. friends of 15-year-old audrey pott remember her as a girl with a wonderful personality. the family's attorney says she want to prevent the same thing from happening to another girl. >> the message is through her story we want to make society safer and better so these things don't happen. >> reporter: the attorney said that audrey was a at a house party, and had been drinking when a group of boys sexuallily assaulted her. >> based on what we know, audrey was unconscious, there were multiple boys in the room with her. she did unimaginable things to her while she was unconscious. making it much worse is the fact that afterwards, apparently a photo or multiple photographs were taken of the assault as it was taking place. >> reporter: he says those photos were posted on line and were seen by several students at the high school. in the days that followed, audrey wrote on her facebook page "the whole school knows, my life is ruined now" eight days after the assault, audrey pott took her own life. the family's attorney says that two of the students are at the high school, a thi

here near the pge substation early yesterday morning. that led to a phone outage in gilroy and parts of south santa clara county. a land line and cell phones. it took down the 911 system in gilroy for a period of time. sheriff's investigators believe the same vandals used a high powered rifle to shoot at the pge transmission station. five transformers were damaged spilling oil. at&t had workers in the field making repairs today. they sathey were completed mid-morning and that service for everyone should be restored. pge also gave us an update on its damage and repairs. >> right now the work is progressing well. the cleanup will take a number of weeks likely up for five weeks -- to five weeks. but right now work is progressing well and we'll have crews working around the clock till we get it completed. >> reporter: pge says at no point did anyone lose power. they are no longer asking people to conserve energy as they were yesterday. the sheriff's office is investigating and put put -- and i put multiple calls into them to get an update on this investigation but nobody has returned our

that gilroy did lose -- the gilroy area did lose land line services sometime this morning. however, we're unable to determine what caused it at this time and we're unable to determine if those two incidents are related. >>> now, the pio for santa clara county sheriff says it is too early to know whether or not those two issues are receipted. but he says that the first priority is getting inside those transformers to figure out how they were vandalized and, in fact, whether they were vandalized by the gunfire that was heard right around 1:45 this morning. the things you need to know today, you need to conserve power if you possibly can because power is being rerouted away from the metcalf substation and those damaged transformers here. also you need to know that 911 service is affected in the gilroy area. that is being rerouted through the county communications center but that means there is a delay in response time. we're trying to figure out what the delay in response time means in terms of seconds, because as we know in an emergency every second matters. santa clara county sheriff wi

in gilroy and other parts of the county. it now appears that the two attacks may be linked and that has sheriff deputies asking some very troubling questions. arturo santiago spoke with the santa clara county sheriff and he joins us live in south san jose. what did you learn? >> reporter: well, we did speak with santa clara county sheriff lori smith less than two hours ago. her investigators now believe that these two acts of vandalism are related. here's how it played out. just after 1:00 this morning, the 911 system in gilroy and others in south santa clara county communities stopped working. a short time later gilroy's residential phone systems stopped working. at&t found the problem at around 7:00 a.m. several manhole covers had been broken into and critical fiber optic wires had been cut, but they couldn't do anything to fix it. that's because just after 3:00 a.m., pg&e reported someone had broken through a fence and vandalized a utility substation in the same area. specifically someone used a high-powered rifle to shoot several holes in a pg&e transformer, starting a massive oil l

calls cannot get through in gilroy if you are using a land line. now, we've made several calls to gilroy law enforcement agencies. we've not been able to get through. we're gonna get you an update on this developing situation as soon as we get more information. >>> we're also following developing news near san jose. that's where a transformer at a pg&e substation has been leaking oil all morning. now, since our last report from ktvu's tara moriarty she's back now and she says vandals may have caused this leak. tara? >> reporter: yeah. we just got off the phone and they say vandals broke into the substakes at 1:30 -- sub station at 1:30 in the morning. gunshots were fired. it was the bullets that hit the transformer and punctured the leak. you can see the transformer there. that's the area we're talking about. the danger here, a leak poses a fire hazard in the transformer. according to officials, the opening could affect the temperature of that oil and flammable could produce. the chances of that happening, they say, are minimal. we are talking about oil that needs to get over 600 degrees

to be related. just after 1:00 this morning, a number of 911 systems went down, including gilroy. now, that gilroy 911 system is still down. their calls are being rerouted. the others are operational. three minutes later, phone systems for residents were reported to be down. at&t reported that manhole covers had been broken into and fiber optic wires had been cut. then just before 2:00 a.m., san jose police in in santa clara county sheriff's office received reports of gun shots. deputies checked out a residential area but didn't find anything. then just after 3:00 a.m., pg&e notified the sheriff's department that someone had broken through its fence, gained access to the substation and vandalized five transformers. the damage resulted in a hazardous materials leak into the substation area. the sheriff's department says a high-powered rifle was used to fire multiple rounds at multiple transformers and equipment. >> we believe that the perpetrator or perpetrators were familiar with systems. they knew where to go for the fiber optic. they knew where to cut. they also were able to take ou

. that forced evacuations and a lock down of schools. ktvu's robert handa is in gilroy with the developments. robert? >> reporter: it has been a long stressful day for people who live here in gilroy where police just wrapped up an all day stand off with a man who claimed he had fire arms and was ready to use them. police surrounded the apartment complex starting around 6:00 a.m. this morning. officers used robots and k9 units to approach the man who was upset about being evicted and threatened to use explosives. the man talked with police during the stand off. we talked to the woman who lives across from the suspect. she heard the man's threats and it scared her. >> he said he had two bombs and two guns. i believe he has the bombs but not the guns because he was explaining to the cops how he had the two bombs, where they were, what they were made of. and what triggered them. when they would go off. >> reporter: the s.w.a.t. team was preparing to introduce gas, upon seeing the officer's approach the suspect surrendered. nobody has been hurt. >> reporter: at this hour police are searching for
